Flipkart.com founded in 2007 is India’s leading e-commerce website with over 40 million products across 80+ categories.
In 2007, the launch of Flipkart was a huge step in Indian e-commerce industry. Back then, online the trend of online shopping had not entered the Indian lifestyle. The company was registered in Singapore. But the headquarters were laid in Bangalore, India.
The two who founded Flipkart are Binny Bansal and Sachin Bansal. They had the experienced of working with Amazon.com thought of starting an e-commerce company in India. Both of them belong to Chandigarh and have studied in IIT, Delhi. They left the job to start make their idea into reality.
Flipkart started the journey with selling books online. But as it saw that the Indian buyers have started giving a positive response to online shopping they started offering other products too.
Any company at the time when Flipkart was launched would have faced two major hurdles. One was regarding the online payment. People do not prefer paying online. So Flipkart introduced ‘cash on delivery’ system. Second problem was about supply and delivery of goods on time. Flipkart solved the problem by installing their own supply chain system.
Going successfully, Flipkart took over Myntra.com and Letsbuy.com etc. But when the Amazon.com entered India, the two have become competitors. The journey of Flipkart proves that if you really believe in your dreams, its work taking a risk.
